All types of surgical treatment for vitiligo aim to transfer melanocytes (pigment producing cells) from normal skin (donor site) to the skin affected by vitiligo.
One of the surgeries is Punch Grafting and the most common surgical technique used. Bit of skin from the donor site of about 2mm are punched out. The donor site is mostly thigh or buttocks. The punched out skin is then placed on vitiligo affected skin.
Surgery is only performed on patients with stable diseases i.e. it hasn’t progressed over a period of 6-12 months.
Vitiligo is a skin disorder that causes white spots on the skin due to the loss of pigment-producing melanocytes. While vitiligo has no direct health hazards, its visible form can have a significant impact on self-esteem and quality of life. Vitiligo surgery offers hope by restoring lost pigment and assisting patients in regaining confidence in their looks.
Vitiligo surgery includes a variety of treatments aimed at re-pigmenting the condition’s white spots. These surgical procedures include introducing melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) to affected areas, therefore reactivating the body’s natural pigment manufacturing process. Vitiligo surgery is a specialised and extremely successful method of treating this complex ailment.
The appearance of white patches on the skin is the defining symptom. The size and form of these patches may vary.
Vitiligo commonly affects both sides of the body symmetrically, however, this can vary.
Vitiligo is often painless and does not cause itching or discomfort.
