How to choose Right Dandruff Shampoo

Dandruff is a common skin condition that causes flakes of skin to appear on the scalp. It occurs due to overgrowth and/or reaction to a yeast Malassezia (one type of fungal) which is a normal part of our skin.

For most people dandruff does not require treatment. However, dandruff causing severe flaking, hair fall, premature greying of hair, truncal acne and accompanying itch requires some medical line of treatment.

There are various anti-dandruff shampoos and leave on lotions available over the counter to choose from. Following are the few tips on Anti-dandruff shampoos:-

1. Choosing medicated shampoo:

Choose any medicated shampoo which contains one of the listed ingredient like Ketoconazole 2%, Zinc Pyrithione, Selenium Sulfide, Ciclopirox and Coal tar

2. Frequency of using anti-dandruff shampoo:

Use anti-dandruff shampoo twice or thrice a week until you find improvement followed which you should continue using it once a week to prevent any recurrence.

3. Lather your scalp

Lather your scalp with anti-dandruff shampoo and leave for at least 3-5 minutes before rinsing.

4. Change your shampoo:

Change your shampoo with a different ingredient if the effect of shampoo is reduced.

And if symptoms persists, consult a certified dermatologist to rule out other causes like psoriasis sebopsoriasis , eczema and fungal infection of scalp.
