Acne tends to expand when things like oil, diet, bacteria, and dead skin accumulate in the skin and intensify the pores. Thousands of skin cells are fallen per hour, some get washed away whereas others are clogged in the pores. The type of clog leads to certain types of acne, some cause scars and some don’t.

Due to the inflammation of acne blemishes, one gets acne scars. The skin pores at and around acne swell which further leads to breakdown. All the acne blemishes and scars are not permanent. Some are small and shallow scars and can be healed easily over time whereas the inner content of some gets spilled in the surrounding issues that leads to deeper scars.

There are the following types of acne that cause scars:

  1. Papules (these are pinkish to reddish in color and a little hurtful).
  2. Pustules (these are filled with pus carrying a red base and whitish to yellowish top).
  3. Nodules (these are bigger in size, extend deeper into the skin, and are more painful).
  4. Cysts (these are filled with pus, extend deeper into the skin, and most obvious reasons to cause scar).

Symptoms

There is no such fixed location where one gets acne, it can happen anywhere. You can have them on the shoulders, face, arms, legs, trunk, and buttocks. If one faces the following symptoms, this would certainly lead to acne scars-

  • Skin bumps getting crusted,
  • Cysts appearing on the skin,
  • Small red bumps start appearing (papules),
  • Small red bumps with white or yellow pus (pustules or pimples),
  • Redness around the bumps or skin eruptions,
  • Whiteheads (clogged skin pores that are closed), and
  • Blackheads (clogged skin pores that are open).

Some acne scars are temporary and vanish gradually over time but some need to be treated. There are various treatments for acne scars, depending on a lot of factors like,

  • Age of person,
  • His medical history,
  • How severe the scar is,
  • The type of scar,
  • How the body reverts to medication and treatments, and
  • Preference of the patient.

The following procedures can certainly help to minimize the acne scars-

  • Microdermabrasion

Less invasive method that minimizes small scars, and treats minor irregularities.

  • Chemical Peels

Removes the top layer of skin and attacks sun damage and uneven skin tone.

  • Dermal filler injections

Injected under the skin to replace the body’s lost collagen and treats visible aging signs and depressed acne scars.

  • Laser resurfacing

Burns the damaged skin using a high-intensity light to minimize fine scars and wrinkles.

  • Intralesional injections

Generally, steroids are injected into the skin at the acne scar that softens and flattens the scar.

  • Cryotherapy

This is generally given with Intralesional injections that freezes the scar tissue causing the scar to automatically fall off.

  • Topical creams

Creams containing silicone and/or retinoids are used that minimize the visibility of scars.

Teenagers are most vulnerable to acne but anyone can get it due to any of the following reasons.

  • Hormonal changes,
  • Medication,
  • Oily products on skin and hair,
  • Humidity,
  • Excessive sweating,
  • Constant touching the skin,
  • Genes,
  • Loss of collagen, and
  • The extent and duration of skin inflammation.

Which acne scars are permanent?

The scars with deeper depressions, technically known as keloid or hypertrophic scars, are permanent unless treated.

What can I do to reduce the chances of scarring?

The best thing to do is to visit a good dermatologist and get treated. A few other things can also help like applying sunscreen daily, avoiding comedogenic cosmetic products, avoiding smoking and squeezing pimples, over-exfoliating the skin, etc.

Do all acne scars need treatment to be removed?

Different types of acne scars leave different impressions on different persons. The reasons and types of acne scars determine if they need treatment or not.

Does touching my acne cause a scar?

Squeezing, picking, or popping pimples worsens the situation. Doing this also leads to the spread of bacteria leading to inflammation and delay in the healing process.

Are these acne scars temporary or permanent?

Not all the scars are permanent. These do become lighter over time. Deeper scars may be treated using certain aesthetic procedures.

Can I get the treatment while having blemishes?

No. One needs to have blemish-free skin for treating acne scars else medications and treatments for acne and scars may collide.

Does acne scar treatment pose any complications?

No major complication occurs post-treatment but yes, the patient can face minor discomfort or a small change in skin colour.

How are acne scars treated?

The dermatologist examines the patient's skin, acne, and the scars. This would help in determining the type of scar and prospective treatment.

What leads to acne scars?

Acne scars occur due to the reason that the body tries to repair acne by releasing collagen. If collagen is in excess, scars get deeper.

What may cause acne?

Sometimes skin pores get clogged; bacteria, oils, and dead skin accumulate in the pores which leads to acne.
